Which are South America’s top 10 universities?

The Universidad de Buenos Aires has been rated as South America’s best university in the new 2015/16 QS World University rankings. Having come third last year, the institution leapfrogs Universidade de São Paulo and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile to take first place.

The ranking analyses the performance of more than 800 of the world’s universities based on six key performance indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, student-to-faculty ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.

The rise of the Universidad de Buenos Aires sees last year’s first and second drop one place each, with scores of 62.4 and 58.1 respectively. The only newcomer on this year’s list is the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina Santa Maria de los Buenos Aires, which takes 10th place.

The changes in position since the 2014/15 rankings are largely caused by a difference in the way scores are calculated, to take into account the different levels of citations in various faculty areas. QS says this has made the ranking more “balanced”.
