Venezuelan epee team suffers injuries in Estonia

Posted by Dubraswka Aguilar on February 25, 2014

The World Cup of Fencing, held in Tallinn, Estonia, left a balance of three injured in the Venezuelan male epee team: Ruben Limardo, Francisco Limardo and Silvio Fernandez; the only one who is completely healthy is Kelvin Canas.

In the individual competition Fernandez, Limardo and Canas were able to finish. The first was positioned in sixth place, the Olympic champion was ninth and Canas took the position 37. The latter won all his fights in his pools, while Francisco was injured right knee. "Apparently the ligaments, but we shall expect the medical report," said Ruperto Gascon, coach of the national team of epee.

In the team competition, neither Ruben nor Silvio could participate. The Olympic champion also had a knee injury and was in for a check-up at a medical center in Estonia. Therefore, only Kelvin and Francisco fought, reaching the second round.

Arriving in Poland, doctors checked “Ru”, but the medical report has not been revealed yet, according to his uncle and trainer. "Hopefully it's nothing serious," said the coach.

As for Fernandez, he is currently in Switzerland and is resting. In Estonia, Silvio had "a contracture on his right leg." The Pan American champion has been optimistic and hopes to attend the 2014 South American Games in Santiago.

The epee is the best male Venezuelan team in the world ranking, with a solid fourth place. If it stays on the top four until next year the national team will get a ticket for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
