Uruguay’s Luis Suarez won’t play Colombia in World Cup after FIFA ‘biting’ suspension

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez won’t play against Colombia in Saturday’s Soccer World Cup match after he was suspended for biting another player, the disciplinary committee of the world’s football governing body (FIFA) reported Thursday.

“Such behavior cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field”

Suarez, aka the “Gunslinger,” was suspended for nine games and banned for four months from any soccer-related activity after biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder during Tuesday’s competition.

According to the FIFA website, Suarez will also have to pay an additional $111,800 fine and is prohibited from entering the confines of any stadium during the ban for committing “an act of unsporting behavior towards another player.”

“Such behavior cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field,” said Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.

The chairman went on to say, “The Disciplinary Committee took into account all the factors of the case and the degree of Mr. Suarez’s guilt in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Code.”
