Under-23 Volleyball Cup: Argentina beat T&T again

Posted by Shanelle Weir on September 15, 2014

Trinidad and Tobago were beaten by Argentina for the second time in four days when the Pan American Women’s Under-23 Volleyball Cup continued Friday night in Peru. And again the Caribbean girls failed to win a set as the South Americans prevailed 25-11, 25-14, 25-18 in 64 minutes.

The good news for the rank outsiders in the tournament was that Channon Thompson, the Most Valuable Player when the T&T senior team was crowned Caribbean champions for the fifth successive time last month, was the only one on the court to reach double figures.

The skipper had eight kills, blocked four shots and had two service winners in her 14 points.

T&T actually had a 9-3 advantage in blocks, but their opponents completely dominated in kills (35-15) and service points (10-2).

The Argentines, who had claimed the bronze medal in the only previous edition of this tournament two years ago, could finish no better than fifth this time and they had to beat Mexico yesterday to do so.

This country’s girls, who have also lost to Mexico and Peru and failed to win a set in the tournament to date, opposed Costa Rica yesterday in the playoff for seventh place.

After being beaten in straight sets by Cuba in the round-robin group phase two days earlier, defending champions Dominican Republic roared back after losing the first two sets to gain revenge 18-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-22, 15-12.

And in the other semi-final, Colombia defeated hosts Peru 28-26, 24-26, 25-21, 25-21.

The champs were crowned last night.
