Trinidad & Tobago gets own stage at SXSW

Posted by Shanelle Weir on February 07, 2015

For the first time in history, Trinidad & Tobago music will get its own stage at South by Southwest (SXSW) – arguably the largest and most influential music festival in the world. Seven T&T musicians and groups will play in a special Trinbago session at the festival in March, garnering international exposure and bringing more attention to the talents in our twin-island nation.

Scheduled to perform are Trinidad James, Mungal Patasar, The Mighty Sparrow, Shurwayne Winchester, Los Alumnos de San Juan, The Codrington Pan Family, and Dennis Morgan.

“This is the first time Trinidad & Tobago will have its own special showcase to promote our music and more of our musicians to the world – it is a tremendous occasion,” said Stephen Howard, CEO of ASK Promotions. “This opportunity came as a direct result of South by Southwest’s booking programmer participating in our Artiste Managers Music Business Conference for the past two years.”

The Artiste Managers Music Business Conference (AMMBCON) is the Caribbean’s #1 business conference for music professionals and is hosted by ASK Promotions out of Trinidad & Tobago.

SXSW Booking Programmer Todd Puckhaber, impressed by the talent he saw at AMMBCON 2013 and 2014, invited the conference organisers to coordinate some of the artistes to showcase at SXSW.

“When I went to AMMBCON I saw an undiscovered pool of talent,” Puckhaber said. “And seeing the talented musicians who may benefit from attending SXSW motivated me to do a special Trinbago showcase.”

Puckhaber already has committed to attend AMMBCON 2015 and share his wisdom in special one-on-one sessions and panel discussions. Artistes who participate in AMMBCON this year also may have a chance to be invited to showcase themselves at SXSW in 2016.

“From what I’ve seen, AMMBCON seems to be one of the few organisations trying to develop talent for the international market,” Puckhaber said. “I look forward to a larger attendance from musicians and music industry professionals this year.”

Leading up to the SXSW festival, AMMBCON is hosting a pre-SXSW showcase at Central Bank Auditorium on March 5, 2015. All the artistes, except Trinidad James, will be performing.

The artistes are excited about the opportunity to perform at SXSW and are grateful for the support of the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism to help them in this initiative.
