Toronto’s Mayoralty Gives 1.76 Million Dollars to Projects Promoted by the Pan-American Community

Posted by Juan Gavasa on August 28, 2014

The city of Toronto has approved the creation of a 1.76 million dollar fund for the financing of projects and activities created by local Pan-American communities. A good part of these funds will be used in initiatives inspired in the Pan-American Games of 2015 and those artistic and cultural manifestations that will be developed during the celebration of the big sports even in July next year.

The councilor César Palacio, also president of the Group of Reference that has advised the Mayor of Toronto in decisions regarding this fund, has said that today is “a historic time because it gives Pan-American communities of the city a backup they never had before.” Palacio has emphasized in the importance of this money given by the mayoralty and the big volition they “have had of making this initiative become true.

Eduardo Harari, general secretary of the Hispanic Canadian Heritage Council has celebrated this agreement and pointed out that “it shows commitment from Toronto’s Municipality in working with its communities and giving them the necessary tools to become part of this world class event that will be celebrated in Toronto next year”.

Manuel Rodríguez, member of the Group of Reference, highlighted the fact that the mayoralty has listened to the recommendations that the Group of Reference has made. ‘We planned several measures to solve deficiency in communication and relations between organizations involved in the Pan-American Games and local Pan-American communities of Toronto. In our first recommendation we identified that these communities weren’t involved in the organization process. With the fund they will be integrated and will have the ability to create conscience about the importance of the Games”. These recommendations go towards communities of young people and ethnical media.

The 1.76 million dollars will be distributed in the following way:

$560,00 will support activities and projects inspired in the Pan-American Games around Toronto.

$885,000 will help projects that might benefit the Latin American, South American and Caribbean communities in the long run, either economically or with social infrastructure.

$315,000 will help art projects and cultural animation during the Games.

The Group of Reference was created in July of last year to advise the Mayor of Toronto in the creation of a project that would help spread the Pan-American Games among Latin-American and Caribbean communities of the city, and would make the members of these, actively involved in them. The quoted César Palacio joined this group, along with Manuel Rodríguez and Fernando Valladáres as community leaders.

Last month the Municipal Council gave the steps to be followed to close a proposal of distribution of the 1.76 million dollars, together with the advise of the Group of Reference. The past Monday the Municipal Council gave its final approval to this budget that will be distributed as mentioned above. All the projects that might get any of this funding will have to be developed during 2015.
