Sundance expands in Latin America

Posted by Juan Gavasa on August 11, 2014

AMC Networks International’s Sundance Channel Global is undertaking a major expansion into Latin America, launching for the first time in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Paraguay.

Additional distribution agreements have been reached in Colombia, the Dominican Republic and Peru with the countries’ largest pay-TV operators. Sundance Channel initially launched in South America in 2013 and is also available in Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Commenting on the development, Ed Palluth, executive VP of global distribution, AMC Networks International, said: “Sundance Channel continues to experience strong growth since last year’s South American launch and will now be widely available in Central America on the leading subscription television platforms in the region. We’re looking forward to offering our distinctive mix of first run original drama and independent films that audiences cannot see elsewhere. Further expansion across all of Latin America is a major priority for us in the months ahead.”

In Panama, the channel will start this month in both SD and HD on Cable Onda, the country’s largest pay-TV platform. Sundance Channel Global has also reached an agreement with Millicom to launch Sundance Channel for the first time on Tigo as a 24-hour SD linear service in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala.

It will also launch as a 24-hour HD service on Tigo Paraguay. The channel will in addition launch on Claro, the biggest pay-TV platform in Colombia and the Dominican Republic, as a 24-hour HD linear service. Sundance Channel is also now available in HD as a 24-hour linear service in Peru on Telefonica’s Movistar, the country’s largest pay-TV operator.
