Sergio Agüero named England's player of the year

Manchester City striker Sergio "Kun" Agüero was named 2014 player of the year by the Football Supporters' Federation of England and Wales. The Argentinian forward accepted the award during a gala at a London hotel.

Agüero, 26, prevailed over teammate Yaya Touré, Chelsea's Eden Hazard and Branislav Ivanovic, Raheem Sterling of Liverpool and Southampton winger Morgan Schneiderlin. Described this week by Man City coach, Manuel Pellegrini, as one of the world's best soccer players, Agüero has 17 goals in all competitions so far this season.

The prize is "very, very special" because it comes from the fans, Agüero said, thanking his teammates and the club. Asked about City's chance of repeating as Premier League champions, he said the side has the talent to remain in the battle for the crown.

The Argentinian international was spectacular last week in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich, beating World Cup-winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer three times in a 3-2 triumph for the English club. "It's nice to score three goals on Neuer, but I would have preferred to score one in the World Cup final," Agüero said, referring to Germany's 1-0 victory over Argentina on July 13.
