Peru chosen as Best culinary destination in the world

The World Travel Awards announced Peru as the Best culinary destination in the world, and Machu Picchu as the Best green destination of the world, according to El Comercio.

This might not surprise many as within the last couple years, Peruvian food has been winning awards internationally, and visitors to Machu Picchu continue to increase.

In fact, World Travel Awards chose Peru as Best culinary destination in 2012 and 2013.

This year, Peru beat other top culinary destinations including China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain, Thailand and the United States in the program’s ceremony held in New Delhi, India.

The World Travel Awards has been giving these awards for the last 19 years, of which the last few have been dominated by Peru.

In 2013, Alejandro Garro of Promarket Peru consulting firm estimated that 1.2 million tourists would have come to Peru by the end of 2013 with the intention of doing gastronomic tourism. This means about 40% of the projected 2013 total of 3.1 million foreign tourists would have come to Peru to satisfy their adventurous palates.
