Pelé Endorses Chile to Go Far in World Cup

Pelé Endorses Chile to Go Far in World Cup

Posted by Juan Gavasa on February 20, 2014

Moral in Chile has been low ever since the group draw for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The heart of every Chilean sunk deeper and deeper as the teams in their group were ominously announced. At every World Cup, there is a supposed “group of death,” which is the hardest group in the tournament. Unfortunately, Chile was drawn into this year’s “group of death.” Spain, ranked #1 in the world, the Netherlands, ranked #10 in the world, and Australia comprised Chile’s group. Only the top two teams advance from each group.

But now, a glimmer of hope. The world icon and one of the greatest football players in history, Pelé, believes Chile will surprise people in this summer’s tournament. Pelé has been travelling around the world, promoting the World Cup for Brazil, and has had a chance to see many teams in action. Unsurprisingly, he believes Brazil will boast the trophy in the end, and that Argentina, Spain, Germany, and Italy are likewise very dangerous. However, what came next surprised many people. Pelé went on to say that Chile has been playing very well and that he believes they will make it to the semi-finals. In other words, O Rei believes Chile is one of the four best teams in the world; very high praise from one of the legends of football.

It wouldn’t be a shock to anyone if Chile was competitive in Brazil. They have a very strong squad with a host of players in Europe; Alexis Sánchez at Barcelona and Arturo Vidal at Juventus for example. However, not many people are picking them to finish ahead of the likes of Spain and Holland. Will Pelé’s prediction prove correct? All eyes will be on the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 to find out.
