Neymar names Messi as top choice for Ballon d'Or

Posted by Juan Gavasa on December 16, 2014

Brazilian striker Neymar revealed in an interview with Brazil's Globo television that he ranked Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Javier Mascherano as the world's best soccer players on his ballot for FIFA's Ballon d'Or award.

Argentina's Messi and Mascherano are teammates of Neymar at FC Barcelona, while Portuguese international Ronaldo plays for Barça archrival Real Madrid.

The full interview is not to be aired until the weekend, but Globo offered a teaser on Monday.

Both Messi and Ronaldo are previous winners of the Ballon d'Or - the Argentine has won it four times - and both are among the finalists this year, but Mascherano did not qualify for the FIFA shortlist.

This was the 22-year-old Neymar's first time voting for the award, one of the perks that accompanied his appointment months ago as captain of the Brazilian national team.

The balance of the interview with Globo, scheduled to air on Sunday, will include Neymar's explanation of the reasoning behind his Ballon d'Or vote.
