New York Fashion Week: Mexican American designer César Galindo creates sci-fi cool

The animated series “The Jetsons” may have ended its run on small-screen airwaves in 1987, but Mexican American designer César Galindo says that the sci-fi television show was among his inspirations for his new women’s wear collection that was both urban chic and evocative of space travel.

“I’m fascinated by technology – both by what it looks like and what it does,” shared Galindo during a backstage interview moments before the presentation of his new Spring/Summer 2014 collection during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. “Technology has come a long way since I was a kid watching ‘The Jetsons’ and I’m so excited to see how much more it changes.”

For Galindo – who founded CZAR by César Galindo after a nearly 20-year career designing collections for brands like Calvin Klein – the opportunity to show New York’s fashion elite his vision of sci-fi cool was nearly out of this world (no-pun intended!).

“There’s lots of pushing the envelope, which I’m excited to share with the public,” said Galindo about his ready-to-wear collection. “There’s a lot layering, because I think technology enables us to live in a layered world. It adds layers to us and it also allows us to layer on top of each other. So you see that in the design element too. Layers are a prominent part in this collection, as is a constant juxtaposition in silhouettes.”
