Messi, Aguero and Di Maria in Argentina Superclasico squad

Posted by Juan Gavasa on September 24, 2014

New Argentina coach Gerardo Martino has named a star-studded squad including Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria for next month’s Gillette Superclasico de las Americas. Barcelona star Messi was left out of Argentina’s recent friendly clash with Germany but returns to the squad that will meet Dunga’s Brazil in Beijing on October 10.

Benfica’s Nicolas Gaitan, Juventus midfielder Roberto Pereyra and Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio are among a handful of new arrivals named by former Barca coach Martino. Dunga named Brazil’s squad for the clash earlier this month.

The Superclasico de las Americas returned in 2011 following a 35-year gap in the once famous fixture, and Brazil claimed the title two-years running before last year’s meeting was cancelled for the Confederations Cup.

A reincarnation of the Copa Roca, it was first contested in 1914 and was christened as such after Argentina’s then president Julio Roca donated a trophy ahead of the first official contest in 1914.

Argentina Squad:

Goalkeepers: Sergio Romero, Nahuel Guzman.

Defenders: Marcos Rojo, Federico Fernandez, Pablo Zabaleta, Martin Demichelis, Mateo Musacchio, Santiago Vergini.

Midfielders: Javier Mascherano, Lucas Biglia, Javier Pastore, Roberto Pereyra, Angel Di Maria, Erik Lamela, Enzo Perez, Nicolas Gaitan.

Forwards: Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero.
