Menotti: Messi is more of a team player than Ronaldo

Posted by Juan Gavasa on January 17, 2015

Former Barcelona and Argentina coach Cesar Luis Menotti believes Lionel Messi is still the best player in the world, despite Cristiano Ronaldo winning the Ballon d'Or.

The debate over which of the Barca and Real Madrid icons is superior has been raging on for several years, with the pair having dominated the Ballon d'Or for each of the past seven seasons.

The Argentine star won the award four times in a row between 2009 and 2012, with Ronaldo's 2013 and 2014 victories adding to his first win in 2008.

But despite the Portuguese being crowned the best player of the last two years, 1978 World Cup winning coach Menotti feels it is Messi who is the best and says the Argentine is more of a team player.

"I still believe that Messi is the best in the world," he told Sport. "He has a special magic and he participates more in the team's play than Ronaldo does.

"Giving Ronaldo the Ballon d'Or this year was right, but I wish Manuel Neuer had won it because of the message it would have sent."

Current Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is currently under immense pressure and Menotti has not been overly impressed by what he has seen at Camp Nou so far in 2014-15.

"Luis Enrique's team are not playing well because I do not see a strong collective idea," he said.

"I know Luis Enrique and he knows the players. The only way for a coach to make it work is with his knowledge. Otherwise, any fool could be a coach. It is still early to evaluate him."
