Lucas Silva’s becomes new Real Madrid player

On the day Real Madrid introduced teenage superstar Martin Odegaard, another big signing dawn at Santiago Bernabeu.

The best Brazilian midfielder in last year’s local tournament, Lucas Silva, has been spotted undergoing the preliminary physical tests in order to sign for Real Madrid, something that could happen over the course of the next days.

With the winter market window closing on February 1st, Carlo Ancelotti and Florentino Perez gave the go ahead to inking the Brazilian, for whom they had made an initial offer in December 2014, right after he won the second Brasileirao in a row with Cruzeiro.

Real Madrid had sat down on the negotiating table with 12 million dollars as an offer, but the Brazilian squad would not budge for less than 15 million.

Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti did not see the need to push on the signing, knowing full well that Silva would be available –and perhaps at a cheaper price as the end of his contract with Cruzeiro nears– next summer. Since Luka Modric’s recovery was also moving forward at the planned rate, the Whites had practically decided to forego the option of signing the talented midfielder.

But then Athletic Bilbao came into the picture. The Basques made an official offer for Asier Illarramendi of 25 million euro. The Spanish midfielder, who arrived at Real Madrid in exchange of 38 million euros from San Sebastian last summer, has failed to adapt to the playing style of the Spanish giants, and while he has had lots of playing time, in the games in which he has been pushed to the limit he simply has not performed.

This was apparent last year against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, where his mistakes nearly cost Real Madrid their spot in semifinals, but also this year in the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco. In the semifinals against Cruz Azul, Real Madrid did not suffer much albeit for two chances the Mexican team created after clear mistakes from Illarramendi.

Ancelotti lost all trust in the player, and ever since he has preferred to give playing time to Sami Khedira, who will likely leave the club in June on a free transfer after letting his contract expire, than to give one last chance to the former Real Sociedad starlet.

And so, when Athletic Bilbao showed up in Madrid with the money, Florentino Perez decided to cut his losses and let go of Illarramendi, and redirect his efforts to bring Lucas Silva to the team immediately.
