The American Society of Cinematographers has conferred its 2014 film award on Mexico's Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki for his work on "Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)."

Lubezki won the ASC's Best Cinematography in Theatrical Releases award for a record-tying fourth time and for the second straight year, having taken home the 2013 prize for his work on Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity."

In this year's edition, he beat out Roger Deakins ("Unbroken"), Dick Pope ("Mr. Turner"), Robert Yeoman ("The Grand Budapest Hotel") and Spain's Oscar Faura ("The Imitation Game").

Lubezki also won the ASC film award for the 2011 feature "The Tree of Life" and the 2006 picture "Children of Men" and was nominated for the 1999 award for "Sleepy Hollow."

The Mexican, who won last year's cinematography Oscar for "Gravity," has been nominated in that same category for "Birdman" in the 87th Academy Awards ceremony, which will take place on Sunday.

Many ASC members also have an Oscar vote, although in the past five years only two ASC film award winners - Lubezki and Wally Pfister, for his work on the 2010 film "Inception" - also went on to win the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

"Birdman," a black comedy directed by Mexican Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu that tells the story of an actor trying to resurrect his career, also has been nominated for a best-picture Oscar.

Jonathan Freeman ("Boardwalk Empire") and John Lindley ("Manhattan") won the 2014 ASC Awards in the episode of a regular series and TV movie, miniseries or pilot categories, respectively.

The ASC Awards ceremony took place Sunday night at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hotel in Los Angeles. EFE
