Local Tango Dancers Take out World Championship in Buenos Aires

The world's most important tango competition comes to a thrilling close. An Argentine and Uruguayan couple has won the World Tango Championships held in Buenos Aires in the final held on Monday.

The couple outperformed another 40 couples, 28 from Argentina, five Colombian, two Russian, and one of each couple from Japan, Singapore, China, South Korea and Italy. According to the Ministry of Culture, 600,000 people attested the event and events leading up to the final.

The winners of the final of the Tango were Lorena Gonzalez Cattaneo born in Uruguay, but a resident of Buenos Aires and Sebastian Acosta of Tucuman. The pair picked up a prize of 40,000 Argentine pesos (US$4,700).

The World Cup is one of the main activities within the International Tango Festival in Buenos Aires, which began on August 13 with nearly 2,000 participating artists.
