Lima vows to organize best-ever Pan American Games

Posted by PanamericanWorld on August 06, 2016

The 2019 Pan American Games in the Peruvian capital will be the best-ever edition of the event, organizing committee chairman Luis Salazar said here Friday.

"Besides the infrastructure, we have two major factors: Peruvians are warm and they will make people feel at home, and we also have a fine culinary culture," he told EFE.

Salazar, who traveled to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympic Games, said that Peru's new president, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, has thrown his full support behind the Pan Am Games project.

"We hope to finish construction of the facilities by December 2018 or January 2019," the chairman said.

Seen as one of Peru's most powerful business executives, Salazar is also a competitive swimmer at the club level.

The 2019 Pan American Games are expected to cost roughly $1.2 billion, with roughly 65 percent of the total earmarked for infrastructure, including new venues for aquatics and gymnastics.
