"Leones del Escogido" Baseball Team History

On February 17th, 1921, Leones del Escogido team was founded. Lions of the Chosen One, as literally translated into English, because these players or lions were chosen to beat the Tigers of Licey which were unbeatable and the dominant team throughout Dominican baseball history.

The first team players were Piñao Acosta, José Sabino, Raúl Comme Fernández alias Moñé, René Velásquez, Ramón Emilio Castillo, Luis Mercado better known as Ñiñi, Luis Mercado Aroche and Amable Reyes. Also, Guaguá Vargas, Fellito Guerra, Mateo De la Rosa, Diógenes Lara, Horacio Alvarez, Armando Aquino (Balito), Juan Vargas and Francisco Frómeta Nina.

The first Manager was Venezuelan Numa Parra.

In their list of sports history are included Juan Marichal (First Dominican to enter the Hall of Fame), the three Alou brothers Jesus, Mateo and Felipe; Sammy Sosa, Mario Melvin Soto, Joaquin Andujar, George Bell, Pedro Guerrero, Juan Samuel, Samuel Mejía, Julio Cesar, Moises Alou and Raul Modesi. All of them of significant importance in Major League Baseball.

The Lions have won 14 Championships and 4 Caribbean Series.
