Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants to be announced in September

Posted by Juan Gavasa on May 31, 2014

Fresh off the heels of the World Cup, organizers of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants will announce their picks of the hottest dining destinations in Latin America this September.

The awards will return to Lima for the second edition, in a ranking that aims to highlight the culinary diversity and fine dining scene of countries like Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, Chile, Mexico, and Brazil, among dozens of others.

All eyes will be on Gaston Acurio, whose flagship Lima restaurant, Astrid y Gaston, predictably took the number one spot last year (organisers did choose, after all, to host their inaugural event in Lima).

The popular celebrity chef is considered the unofficial ambassador of Peru and also snagged the lifetime achievement award.

Another recurring name on World’s 50 Best lists is chef Alex Atala of D.O.M. restaurant in Sao Paulo, who will likely be a heavily weighted favourite to take the top spot, particularly given the amount of international interest in Brazil after hosting the World Cup.

D.O.M. followed closely behind Astrid y Gaston to take the second spot on Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants list and is ranked seventh overall on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for 2014, making it the highest ranked restaurant from Latin America.

Likewise, look out for Mani, also in Sao Paulo, to land one of the top spots, after its chef, Helena Rizzo, was named the World’s Best Female Chef this year.
