Latin America has world’s happiest countries

Today is the United Nations’ International Day of Happiness, and a new Gallup poll shows that the top 10 countries for positive emotions are all in Latin America.

Topping the list on the Positive Experience Index is Paraguay, where 89 percent of people experienced positive emotions the day before they were surveyed.

The 2014 poll of about 1,000 people in each of 143 countries is based on five factors: feeling well-rested, feeling respected, experiencing enjoyment, smiling or laughing a lot, and learning something interesting.

The overall score for the world is 71 percent. The rating for the U.S. is 79, tying for 15th on the list. At the bottom is Sudan, with 47 percent.

Margin of error is plus or minus 1 percentage point overall, and from plus or minus 2.1 points to plus or minus 5.3 points at the country level.
