The .lat domain is already a reality

The launch of the most Latin top-level domain on the Internet will be made official in Los Angeles today under the name of .lat, conceived as the Latin American alternative to the ubiquitous dot-com.

Its creation will take place the last day of the 51st summit of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, which kicks off Monday in this California city to debate, among other things, the governing of the network of networks.

The .lat domain is the brainchild of the Federation of Latin-America and the Caribbean for the Internet and Electronic Commerce (eCOM-LAC), which has fought to bring it into existence for almost 10 years, after investing some $185,000 in the idea and presenting exhaustive documentation that was approved by ICANN in late 2013.

"Dot-lat is the biggest thing we've done up to now," eCOM-LAC Executive Director Anthony Harris told EFE.

Harris is one of the chief promotors of this top-level domain that was conceived to help develop Internet usage in Latin America, though its application has no territorial limits.

"It's for the Latin community around the world, no matter in what country," he said.

After ICANN signs the contract Thursday at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hotel in Los Angeles with the Uruguayan non-profit eCOM-LAC, the latter will put in motion the system for selling its .lat domain in 2015 for between $20-30 a year.
