Lakers finally get first win of the season

Purple and gold streamers rained from the Staples Center rafters, and fans stood and cheered and whipped out camera phones to capture the scene, one the Los Angeles Lakers and their followers know well.

Only this was different.

Sunday wasn't so much a celebration as a collective sigh of relief -- for the team, the fans, the city. The franchise with more NBA wins that any other finally recorded its first of 2014-15, beating the Charlotte Hornets 107-92. Victory had eluded the Lakers for two weeks and five straight losses, their worst start since 1957, but, as Kobe Bryant said afterward, "We've got to start somewhere."

Now it's only a matter of seeing whether the Lakers can keep this momentum going and avoid being at the bottom of the league standings by the end of the season, at least. Being one of the most successful franchises in the history of the NBA, it would not be surprising to see the Lakers bounce back to title contention eventually, however that is going to take some time. At the moment, even the Playoffs seem to be far from the Lakers’ reach, so one can only hope they can pull it together and add some new pieces in the next couple of years and recover their old, dominant form sooner than later.
