How to calculate Blue Jays magic number

Posted by PanamericanWorld on September 17, 2015

The magic number is 10 for the Blue Jays to clinch their first post-season berth since 1993 after Wednesday’s games.

So any combination of Toronto wins and Minnesota Twins losses adding up to 10, and the Jays will be in the playoffs for the first time since they won the World Series more than two decades ago.

Some questions and answers as the American League pennant race heats up with 17 games left in the season for the Jays.

  • Who holds a playoff berth now?

East: Toronto Blue Jays, 83-62 record

Central: Kansas City Royals (85-60)

West: Texas Rangers (78-67)

Wildcards: New York Yankees (80-65), Houston Astros (77-69)

  • What’s a ‘magic number’ for the playoffs?

Any combination of wins by Team A and losses by Team B that makes it impossible for Team B to make the playoffs.

  • How do you come up with Toronto’s magic number for the playoffs?

Take the best team chasing the last wildcard spot. Right now, that’s the Minnesota Twins (75-70).

There are 162 games in the baseball season so here’s the formula:

162 + 1 – Toronto’s wins – Minnesota losses

= 162 + 1 – 83 – 70

= 10

  • How do you come up with Toronto’s magic number to clinch the AL East Division?

It’s the same formula. Take the second-place team in the East, which is the Yankees (80-65)

162 + 1 – Toronto’s wins – New York’s losses

= 162 + 1 – 83 – 65

= 15

So any combination of Toronto wins and Yankees losses adding up to 15 and the Jays will win the AL East Division.

  • How is home-field advantage determined throughout the playoffs?

The AL team with the best record ensures home-field advantage throughout the entire playoffs. Right now, that’s the Royals.

For the match between the two wildcard teams, the club with the best record that didn’t win the division hosts the winner-take-all game.

The wild-card winner then plays the team with the best record in a best-of-five American League Division Series.
