Hotels offer attractive packages to increase tourism

Posted by Dubraswka Aguilar on March 17, 2014

Attractive packages to draw visitors this season - lower than usual- have been launched by several hotels in Nueva Esparta, in order to face the drastic fall in their business registered since last February, when a popular conflict started in several cities.

Given the difficult situation, hotels in Margarita and other Caribbean islands are trying to rescue somehow the occupancy of their rooms after the drop since last February. And, as it seems, the tendency is starting to get to normal. For example, Lidotel, located in the shopping center Sambil Margarita, reported a kind of recuperation, going from a low occupancy rate of 30% to 52% during the last weekend, according to the CEO, Carolina Koch.

With 24 years experience in hospitality, Koch notices that Lidotel had to adapt marketing plans to the unusual situation in the country, and as an incentive offer lower rates, with 25 % off this month.

If domestic tourism is scarce in Margarita, international is almost nil, almost counted on the fingers of the hand.

“A few days ago we welcomed a group of Chinese citizens who occupied 12 of the 134 rooms at the hotel, but that’s something really unusual these days,” Koch said.

On Carnival, in February, the cancellations of reservations began. The positive thing is that most of people just asked to postpone bookings or move them to a specific date.

The strategy for now is to keep special rates for the next 30 days. While Lidotel offers 25 % discount, in other hotels, different packages are promoted such as children under 12 years exempt from paying the fee. They are a sort of incentive to attract people in the midst of these circumstances.

Domestic tourism in Margarita basically comes from Caracas, Maracaibo, Valencia and Puerto Ordaz.

Non “sacrificing” payroll, most hotels in Nueva Esparta have restructured their budget, reduced operating expenses and discontinued activities, especially music events and other similar contracts.
