Hit by Pitch, the Miami Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton Is Taken to Hospital

Posted by Liliana Castaño on September 12, 2014

The Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton was hit under the left eye by a fastball and was bleeding from the face as he was taken off the field in an ambulance during Thursday night’s game against the host Milwaukee Brewers. The Marlins said Stanton, the major league leader in runs batted in, was being treated at a hospital for a facial cut. He was also undergoing X-rays and a CT scan.

Stanton was struck by an 88-mile-per-hour pitch from Mike Fiers. The Brewers won the game, 4-2, with home runs from Matt Clark and Ryan Braun.

It was ruled that Stanton swung at the pitch. Reed Johnson pinch-hit for Stanton and was hit in the hand by Fiers’s next pitch. Casey McGehee was in the on-deck circle and started yelling at Fiers, and both benches and bullpens emptied. The umpires ejected McGehee and Marlins Manager Mike Redmond.
