Haida Gwaii Is Canada's Best Kept Secret

Posted by Juan Gavasa on May 26, 2014

Oh, Canada. Who knew you were hiding this gem from us?

Formerly known as the "The Queen Charlotte Islands," Haida Gwaii is an ancient Canadian archipelago located just off the coast of British Columbia. Its name translates to "Islands of the People," and is the perfect combination of both remote and accessible.

Sometimes called the "Canadian Galápagos," Haida Gwaii is inhabited by native Haida people. Surfing is popular from October to May, and everyone seems to pick up a fishing pole come June. If you're not into being on the water, try trekking through gorgeous national parks and heritage sites, making sure to stop by Old Massett and Skidegate to learn more about the Haida culture. No matter when you visit, just be sure to pack a raincoat!
