The young engineers working in Belo Horizonte are experts on search software for "organizing and facilitating" users' interactions with the platform, Berthier Ribeiro-Neto, Google's engineering director for Latin America, said.

"The medium-term expectation is to double the (center's) size, because Google has great confidence in Brazilian human capital," Ribeiro-Neto told EFE.

The capital of Minas Gerais state was selected for the facility because the city became the home of the first Google office in Brazil in 2005 and can draw on professional support from Valle de São Pedro, a cluster of 200 tech companies operating in the metropolitan area.

Google's expansion out of Belo Horizonte strengthens the image of the city as the Brazilian Silicon Valley, Ribeiro-Neto said.

"An investment such as this in the current (economic) circumstances is a bet and a show of confidence that we will be able to attract high-level professionals for projects with a global impact," Fabio Coelho, president of Google Brasil, said.

Engineer Luiz Andre Barroso said the opening of the operations center in Brazil proved "that not all the brightest minds in the world are in Mountain View (California)," where Google's headquarters is located.

In the trial phase, the Brazilian center produced 250 upgrades to the global search engine and its engineers are now working on improving searches on local and health subjects.

"Currently, the system is able to associate the real name (of a medication or a disease) with its more common name, which makes the search easier and more useful. This is being reprogrammed for Latin America from Belo Horizonte," Bruno Possas said.
