Google offering $600,000 for LatAm research awards

Google announced Thursday the call for entries for its Research Awards for Latin America, in which it will invest $600,000, double the amount awarded in last year's edition of the prizes, which are designed to support research in computer sciences.

The prizes consist of monthly scholarships to master's or doctoral students and their professors so that they may carry out their research, the company said in a statement.

Applicants have until June 9 to submit their proposals. The event at which the winners will be announced will take place in August in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, at the offices of Google's new Engineering Center.

Among the issues financed by the awards are intelligent cities, the Internet of Things, natural language processing, online privacy, data mining and information organization.

The tech giant said that it wants the awards to help build a community of researchers in Latin America who share an interest in advancing computer activities in specific areas as well as emphasizing the work that local researchers are doing.

Last year, 12 students and 12 professors from Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Colombia were presented with the awards.

Half of the projects were linked with artificial intelligence and research in areas such as computer text reading. Others focused on the health area, dealing with problems like preventing diabetes and early detection of dementia.

Google said that some of those winners are currently in the process of patenting their projects or producing prototypes.

The many entries were of such high quality last year that the firm decided to double the funds it allocates to the prizes hoping to identify more groups of researchers working in areas that are of great interest to Google, said Berthier Ribeiro-Neto, the head of the Belo Horizonte center, in remarks presented in the statement.
