Fraser-Pryce Confirmed For NY's Adidas Grand Prix

Posted by Shanelle Weir on April 24, 2014

Organisers yesterday announced that 2014 World Indoor 60-metre champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has been confirmed for the adidas Grand Prix Diamond League meet in New York on June 14.

Fraser-Pryce, the 2013 IAAF World Champion-ships triple gold medallist and 2013 IAAF Female Athlete of the Year, joins countryman Yohan Blake, the double Olympic 2012 silver medallist, who will also compete at the meet on its 10th anniversary.

David Rudisha, the 2012 Olympic 800-metre gold medallist, and two-time Olympic shot put champion New Zealand's Valerie Adams were also confirmed yesterday.

Rudisha, the world record holder (1:40.91) from Kenya, missed the 2013 season because of injury, but will be looking for a memorable return to the meet where he created a stir in 2012. He sent the crowd into a frenzy with a stunning final lap that saw him stop the clock at 1:41.74, the fastest time ever run in the USA. The 25-year-old Kenyan holds six of the 10 fastest 800m times run in history.

Adams has been unstoppable in her discipline. She has not lost a competition in more than three years, a streak of 46 straight victories going back to August 22, 2010. The New Zealander had eight of the 10 longest throws in the world last year and has been ranked number one in the world for eight of the past nine years.

Confirmed stars

Stars who had been confirmed earlier for the meet include reigning Olympic 100-metre hurdles champion Sally Pearson; high jump stars Bohdan Bondarenko, Erik Kynard and Mutaz Essa Barshim; 400-metre hurdlers Michael Tinley and Javier Culson, as well as Olympic and World 400-metre champion, Britain's Christine Ohuruogu.

The adidas Grand Prix is the sixth stop on the IAAF Diamond League circuit and has been the scene of two World records over the past decade.

Jamaica will have fond memories of the 2008 edition, when Usain Bolt smashed the 100-metre World Record for the very first time.
