Floyd Mayweather visits Cuba

Posted by PanamericanWorld on October 15, 2015

American retired boxer Floyd Mayweather, regarded as one of the greatest fighters of all time, made a brief trip to Cuba this week and uploaded photos of the visit to social media.

The images posted to his Twitter and Instagram accounts include one of Mayweather on a street in Old Havana, the city's historical center, surrounded by admirers and dressed in a T-shirt and cap bearing his TMT (The Money Team) clothing and accessories brand.

Another shows the retired pugilist at a gym he visited to get a first-hand look at the training received by young fighters in Cuba, which has long been a hotbed of boxing talent, the government Web site Cubadebate reported, citing a member of Mayweather's team that accompanied him during Tuesday's visit.

Mayweather, listed by Forbes magazine as the world's highest-paid athlete in 2015 with record earnings of $300 million, much of it from a much-ballyhooed May 2 fight against Filipino Manny Pacquiao, retired from boxing after one final defense of his welterweight title in September improved his unbeaten record to 49-0.

He was welcomed in Havana by 60-year-old legendary Cuban champion and trainer Jorge Hernandez, a gold medalist in the light flyweight division in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Cubadebate said.

Other athletes have also visited the island since Cuba and the United States announced a plan last December to restore full diplomatic ties.

In June, former Real Madrid striker Raul Gonzalez and his New York Cosmos teammates played a friendly against the Cuban national team in Havana, a game attended by that club's honorary president, Brazilian soccer legend Pele, who was making his first visit to Cuba.

A few weeks later, Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, a United Nations Children's Fund ambassador, visited Cuba to learn about Unicef's projects on the Caribbean island.
