FIFA Women's World Cup: Ecuador's Angie Ponce nets unfortunate hat trick

Posted by PanamericanWorld on June 13, 2015

Ecuador's Angie Ponce netted her country's first ever goal in the Women's World Cup on Friday, unfortunately it was partnered with two own goals in a 10-1 drubbing by Switzerland.

The 18-year-old defender was responsible for opening the scoring at the 24th minute on the wrong side of the field with a failed clearing attempt.

Her next goal came on a penalty shot and thankfully it prevented Ecuador from being shut out by the relentless Swiss. It was her team's first official goal in only their second World Cup match.

Ponce completed her hat trick with another disastrous clearing attempt to put Switzerland up 8-1.

This was definitely not the way she wanted to earn her first hat trick at the international level.
