Felix Hernandez, ready for the season

Posted by Dubraswka Aguilar on March 27, 2014

Along five episodes, the first opener for the Seattle Mariners, Felix Hernandez, found that is completely ready to start a new season in the majors.

In the last preseason game, last Tuesday against the Kansas City Royals, the "King" allowed three runs and five hits with six strikeouts, no walks granted; a summary of which was his last start in the spring training.

“Now it's time to start a new season and I'm ready for it," he told reporters after the game. I saw everything I wanted to see. Every pitch was working really well," he added.

In the first inning his biggest enemy of the day, Nori Aoki, started with a single and later scored after another hit by Billy Butler –who also scored a run- and a double by Alex Gordon.

“During the first inning I was a little out of the zone and I also failed a couple of pitches. But after that, I was fine," he explained.

It was not until the end of the fifth inning when Hernandez tolerated another run, driven by Aoki with a double and scored by Lorenzo Cain.

According to the team's plans, Hernandez was scheduled to reach the sixth or seventh. However, after 67 pitches, both the Venezuelan opener and his manager, Lloyd McClendon, considered it was enough.

"It was good for me. I'm ready to throw 100 (in his next start) or anything," he said.

As good as it gets

Hernandez has the privilege of setting a record for the Seattle Mariners to be, for the seventh time, the opener of the season’s debut.

“Starting a new season is always fun, it is always on national TV," joked the winner of the Cy Young 2010 in the American League.

Beyond the natural interest in one of the best pitchers in the majors, his main goal is not statistical.

“Finish it strongly," he managed to answer to one of the questions most frequently asked at this point in the preseason.

Given the physical problems he had in the last few months of last season, Hernandez has shown that is in a good point in regards to his health. "I feel really fresh. My arm is good, my body feels good" he said.
