Edmonton recommended as one of the best summer trips for 2015

Edmonton is included on the magazine’s Best Summer Trips 2015 list in a recent online piece alongside destinations like Machu Picchu, Athens and Bermuda.

Coun. Andrew Knack said the accolade is “fantastic news” for the city.

“I think it shows that a lot of the work that’s happened over the last decade is really starting to pay off in terms of attraction of events, but also just investing in arts and culture throughout the city,” he said.

“We are a pretty amazing city, and we don’t always have to be humble about it. So we should really be trumpeting this as much as we can.”

Travel writer Maryellen Kennedy Duckett writes that Alberta’s capital is “one of Canada’s sunniest cities, with about 2,300 total hours of sunshine annually. The lightest and brightest days typically are in June when the sun rises at 5:30 a.m. and doesn’t set until around 10 p.m.,” she writes.

The piece calls Edmonton “The Festival City,” naming international summer events including the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, the Servus Heritage Festival, and the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival.

It tells travellers how to get around on Edmonton Transit Service and recommends places to stay and eat, particularly highlighting the Old Strathcona neighbourhood. The Metterra Hotel on Whyte Avenue, North 53 restaurant on 124 Street, and the Old Strathcona and 104 Street farmers markets are specifically praised.

Duckett advises that before travellers come to Edmonton they watch the film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck, for its scenes filmed at Fort Edmonton Park.
