Ecuadorian Embassy taps Ketchum to promote trade, tourism

WASHINGTON: The Embassy of Ecuador has appointed Ketchum as its PR agency to promote the country’s economic development, trade, and tourism. Working with Nathalie Cely, the Ambassador of Ecuador to the United States, Ketchum’s Washington, DC office will provide communications counsel, outreach, and monitoring for the embassy and Ecuadorian government, according to a Foreign Agency Registration Act form. The agency signed the contract last month.

Ketchum confirmed the hire in a statement but declined to comment further. Under the terms of the contract, Ketchum’s services will include day-to-day campaign management, crisis communications, social media counsel, outreach to influencers such as think tanks and foundations, media monitoring, spokesperson training, and collaboration on white papers. The firm will also be responsible for managing two media tours with Ambassador Cely and two dinners for media and influencers.

Ketchum will not make any effort to influence US agencies or officials to change domestic or foreign policy on behalf of Ecuador, the document says. The embassy will pay Ketchum a flat fee of $35,000 per month from March 1 through December 31, 2014, according to the form.

Ketchum has also worked for the Russian Federation since 2006. For the last six months of 2013, Ketchum billed the Russian Federation nearly $1.6 million, according to the latest Foreign Agent Registration Act forms filed with the Justice Department.
