Detroit Pistons' Charlie Villanueva presents some value in contract year

His Pistons tenure is drawing mercifully to an end as he enters the final season of the disastrous signing. Signed to be a big-time offensive threat, his scoring average has gone down every season with the Pistons — culminating in last season’s 6.8 points per game average. His salary is $8,580,000 million (final year of five-year, $35-million deal).

After spending most of the last four seasons as one of the league’s worst deals, Villanueva is actually a valuable trade chip — well, at least his expiring contract is valuable. Pistons were fortunate to swing trade for talent like Brandon Jennings without giving up expiring deals of Villanueva and Rodney Stuckey.  They retain trade flexibility. And Villanueva’s skill set could be useful becausethe team does need shooting.
