The largest Latin American retrospective of Spanish artist Salvador Dali ended its Brazilian engagement after receiving a record 1.5 million visitors in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, organizers said Friday.

The show devoted to the Surrealist icon attracted 970,000 visitors in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's tourist mecca, and another 530,000 in Sao Paulo, the financial capital, according to the sponsor, Spanish firm Abertis.

Brazilian attendance for the touring exhibit surpassed that at the Pompidou Center in Paris and Madrid's Reina Sofia Museum.

The exhibition included 24 oil paintings, 135 drawings and several documents reflecting lesser-known aspects of Dali's work, such as the prints he made in 1969 for an edition of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland," or a series of flowers and fruits with human shapes.
