Cristo Rey premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival

Cristo Rey is a Dominican film directed by Leticia Tonos, born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. 

Leticia Tonos Paniagua graduated from the University of APEC in Advertising in 1992 and started as a production assistant in Claudo Chea Films. Tonos also produced TV Commercials and feature films for international companies such as Vega Films (Switzerland), CineSon (Los Angeles), Forti Lane (Miami), among others. Tonos graduated from Film Direction at the Lodon Film School, her short film "Ysrael" based on a Junot Díaz story was well received internationally. She also directed Spiral Line, and Extraordinary People. Her first feature film "La Hija Natural" or Love Child, as translated into English won a prize for the Audience of 27th Chicago Latino Film Festival and was the Dominican Republic's official entry in the Best Foreign Film category into the Academy Awards.

Cristo Rey tells the story of two half brothers one Dominican and the other Haitian-Dominican, both who enter into conflict for the love of the same woman.

Cristo Rey is a dominican poor neighborhood in the city of Santo Domingo, where Janvier of Haitian origin sees himself forced to struggle in as the bodyguard of a Kingpin's daughter so he can make enough money to run away with the love of his life to Haiti. Meanwhile, Rudy, Dominican and also ex-boyfriend of Jocelyn, the kingpin's daughter, is not very thrilled of the attention Janvier is getting from Jocelyn.

The film is set for the most part in the Dominican Republic although some shots were made in Port-au-Prince. The stars of the film are James Saintl, Yasser Michelen Cunillera and Akari Endo. There will be special appearences of iconic figures such as Dr. Cruz Jiminian and Father Rogelio Cruz.

Humberto "Che" Castellanos is the line producer, while Kika Ungaro is the direcor of photography, Alexis Peña and David Almengod as music directors and Miguel Fernández as casting director.

Leticia Tonos commented, "Cristo Rey is my second feature film, I am happy with how exciting the story ends up, I believe we captured the very essence of the neighborhood", she expressed. 

The official world premiere of Cristo Rey is on September 10th at 9:00PM at the Scotiabank Theater in the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada.
