Carlos Vela nominated as best striker in the Spanish league

Mexican Carlos Vela has been nominated for “Best Striker” in the 2013-14 Spanish LFP (Liga de Futbol Profesional) Awards.

The 25-year-old Cancun native was named alongside Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and former Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa for the award, for which the winner will be announced at a ceremony on Oct. 27.

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi was left out despite having netted 28 goals in 31 appearances last season, while Vela’s haul of 16 goals in 37 games was his career record.

The nomination is evidence of the high regard with which Vela is held in Spain.

“Vela’s prodigious pace and electricity make him one of the most dangerous strikers in Spanish football,” reads a statement on the LFP website.

Vela has started this season a little off the pace, likely because of ongoing injury issues, but his name has again been linked with a return to the Mexican national team.

The former Arsenal forward hasn’t played for El Tri since March 2011, but the federation has stated Vela is under consideration for next month’s friendlies in Europe against the Netherlands and Belarus.

Vela has given no indication, as yet, of whether he will accept or not.
