Caribbean Cup: Soca Warriors Ready for Action

Caribbean Cup: Soca Warriors Ready for Action

Posted by Shanelle Weir on October 08, 2014

“I see these as three tough matches. We’re not going to sit down and underrate the opponent because of the names of the countries. We are confident in our ability but at the same time we will not take any of these three teams lightly,” said Trinidad and Tobago captain Kenwye Jones, ahead if today’s Caribbean Cup match against Dominican Republic.

Jones leads a top qualify Soca Warrior team in the opening match of their Group and semi-finals series which will see four team battle for two spots into the 2014 Caribbean Cup final which takes place in Montego Bay, Jamaica from November 9-19. T&T begin the series today from 8.15 p.m., against the Dominican Republic, while the opening game of the four team competition sees St Lucia playing Antigua-Barbuda, currently ranked the top team in the Caribbean.

Trinidad and Tobago field its best team for many years in the Caribbean Cup, since the tournament is being played for the first time on FiFA international match date, allowing for most of the internationals to return home.

Among them Vietnam-based Hughton Hector and Daneil Cyrus, the England-based trio of Jones, Justin Hoyte and Andre Boucard and Belgium-based Khaleem Hyland. Head coach have assembled much of the team which played against Iran and Argentina before the World Cup and also at last year’s CONCACAF Gold cup. Still, Jones calls for concentration from his players.

“I’m quite confident in the squad. For us it’s just a continuation of the progress we have been making over the past nine months. Coming into the tournament there will be a bit more pressure placed on us because we’ve been playing some terrific football over the past few months and now it will be expected that we can live up to that and deliver the goods against our Caribbean opponents,” Jones told TTFA Media. “We’re happy with the training so far and we’re just looking forward to getting out there and pulling off some good results over the next week or so.”
