Canadian Andrew Wiggins is Rising Stars MVP

Posted by Juan Gavasa on February 14, 2015

Canadian Andrew Wiggins scored 22 points, Rudy Gobert added 18 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots, and the World team beat the U.S. 121-112 on Friday night in the Rising Stars Challenge at NBA all-star weekend.

Wiggins, the Toronto-born No. 1 pick who plays for Minnesota, was the game’s MVP.

Brooklyn’s Bojan Bogdanovic, playing on his home court, and Chicago’s Nikola Mirotic each added 16 points for the World.

Orlando’s Victor Oladipo and Zach LaVine of Minnesota each scored 22 points for the U.S. team in a game between rookies and second-year players.

Alvin Gentry said he liked the new Rising Stars Challenge format. It makes it more interesting and competitive. There's one thing he'd change, though.

"It should be North America against the World," Gentry said. "And then that way we get Canada. If we get Canada, we have [Andrew] Wiggins on our team."

The head coach of the US team marveled at Wiggins as the rookie put up 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting and led his team to a 121-112 win on Friday. He added six rebounds and four assists, looking like the most talented player on the floor because he is.

"This trophy is for the world and, most importantly, for Canada," Wiggins said when he was named MVP.

The No. 1 pick and a virtual lock to run away with the Rookie of the Year award in a few months, Wiggins is making the most of the opportunity he's been given in Minnesota. He's also making highlight after highlight, and there were no shortage of them at Barclays Center.

The best one? His alley-oop finish off a pass from Dennis Schröder, where he contorted his body in midair, caught it and slammed it home with two hands.
