Argentina's "Relatos Salvajes" (Wild Tales) and Venezuela's "Libertador" (The Liberator) are among a group of nine films included on the Foreign Language Film Oscar shortlist, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said in a statement Friday.

"Libertador," directed by Alberto Arvelo and based on the life of South American independence hero Simon Bolivar, stars Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez, American Danny Huston, Britain's Iwan Rheon, Spain's Maria Valverde, and features music composed by Venezuela's Gustavo Dudamel.

The other seven movies that advanced to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category include Poland's "Ida," directed by Pawel Pawlikowski and winner of the best picture and best director honors and three other prizes at this month's European Film Awards.

Also included on the shortlist are Estonia's "Tangerines," directed by Zaza Urushadze; Georgia's "Corn Island," by George Ovashvili; Mauritania's "Timbuktu," by Abderrahmane Sissako; the Netherlands' "Accused," by Paula van der Oest; Russia's "Leviathan," by Andrey Zvyagintsev; and Sweden's "Force Majeure," by Ruben Östlund.

"Specially invited committees in New York, Los Angeles and, for the first time, London," will narrow the list down to the category's five nominees, which will be unveiled on Jan. 15 along with the other Oscar nominations, the Academy said.

"Libertador" would be the first Venezuelan film to be nominated in this category, while "Relatos" is vying to become the eighth Argentine movie to secure that honor.

Two films from that latter country have won the Foreign Language Film Oscar: the 1985 movie "La historia oficial" (The Official Story) and the 2009 picture "El secreto de sus ojos" (The Secret in Their Eyes).

The 87th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on the night of Feb. 22 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
