4 Latin American Capitals Finalists of the New 7 Wonder Cities Contest

Havana, Mexico City, La Paz and Quito are now on the last stage of the competition, which was organized by Switzerland's New7Wonders Foundation, which was an initiative started in 2000 as a Millennium project to choose Wonders of the World from a selection of 200 existing monuments, the entity implemented a voting system on the internet to select the new wonder cities of the world.

The selection is based on the general public’s vote plus the recommendations of a panel of seven experts headed by Federico Mayor, former Director of UNESCO, and made up of renowned professionals in the fields of architecture and urban planning, communication, sociology, and economics.

Other cities competing for the privileged are Barcelona, Beirut, Chicago, Doha, Durban, Kuala Lumpur, London, Perth, Reykjavik and Vigan, according to an announcement made in Munich by Bernard Weber, founder and president of the institution.

The vote opened in 2012 with over 1200 nominations, the list was reduced to 28 finalists in 2013 and finally is on its large stage till the winners are announced on December 7, 2014.
